DESCRIPTION

SCHEDULE

English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL courses focuses on knowledge and skills in the English literacy and civics units such as Healthcare, Diversity, Banking, and Education.  Classes offer growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening and technology in a sequence of levels. Levels include Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. 

 

The last day to register for the 1st quarter is September 5, 2019.  Registration for 2nd quarter begins in October 2019.

High School Diploma
(HSD)/ GED

It’s never too late to earn your high school diploma! Individualized  instruction offered in a friendly, supportive environment to help adults realize their lifelong objectives. Personalized instruction may include direct instruction, blended learning, credit recovery, and distance learning,

General Equivalency Diploma (GED)/ HiSet Test Prep

 Fast track to GED or HiSet testing! Review the four current subject areas (Language Arts, Science, Social Science, and Math) in a supportive environment with knowledgeable instructors. This is an alternative high school diploma equivalence for native Spanish speakers and for native English speakers.

This class is offered in both languages.

Citizenship

This course prepares students to pass the oral and written exam for citizenship of the United States. This class is taught in English. Prerequisite: None.

IET: Computer English for Business

Internet Basics

This is a class for beginners to learn how to use web browsers and search engines to navigate the world wide web.  We will discuss best practices for online safety while surfing the web and submitting information. Prerequisite: Basic Computer Skills  or experience using a touchpad or mouse.  Northstar Digital Literacy Certification * is available for this class.

 

All computer classes begin on October 14, 2019. The last day to register for 2nd quarter computer classes is October 24, 2019.

 

 

Microsoft Excel

This is an introduction to spreadsheets in Microsoft Excel 2016. Learners will enter data in cells, format cells, adjust, insert and delete rows and columns, sort data, and create graphs or charts using data. We will perform calculations using formulas and functions, change page orientation and select a print area. Prerequisite: Microsoft Word   Northstar Digital Literacy Certification * is available for this class.  

 

 

 

* In order to earn a Northstar Digital Literacy Certification, student must pass the assessment with a score of 85% or higher.  Student must present a valid photo ID on Northstar test days. Student must attend at least 60% of classes to take the Northstar test.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

This is the entry-level class into the growing nursing profession. The 7-week course is fast-paced, with instruction in the classroom and practical experience learned in a clinical setting.

Catering Fundamentals

A hands-on course that focuses on preparing students for success ina professional environment. Students will learn  essential kitchen and service skills while preparing to become a catering entrepreneur or to enter the workforce.The cost is $75 per quarter. Limited scholarships are available.

Kitchen Fundamentals

Earn a professional Kitchen Prep Certificate while learning about sustainable hospitality and culinary arts. A hands-on course that focuses on preparing students for success in a commercial kitchen. Students will prepare for ServSafe certification, gain essential kitchen skills, and be prepared to enter the culinary workforce. Class runs for ten weeks. The cost is $75 per quarter. Limited scholarships are available.

Family Safety in the Car

This class is for adults who have been cited by police authorities for violations related to car seats or bike helmets. Monterey Adult School has provided classes on behalf of the Monterey County Health Department for the past ten years for adults cited for violations. We provide these classes once a month on Friday evenings. There is a $45.00 fee for the class.

Parent Ed

 Play and Learn!

Classes for young children 0-5 years old. The focus of these classes are Parent and child interaction, parenting skills, family literacy, positive discipline, and having fun!
