We offer both in-person and online classes.

English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL courses focus on knowledge and skills in English literacy and civics units such as Healthcare, Diversity, Banking, and Education.  Classes offer growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening, and technology in a sequence of levels. Levels include Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. 

ESL classes are offered in-person and online. We are pleased to announce that we will have an evening ESL class in-person at Marina Vista.

The last day to register for 1st quarter ESL classes is August 31, 2022.

High School Diploma
(HSD)/ GED

It’s never too late to earn your high school diploma! Individualized instruction offered in a friendly, supportive environment to help adults realize their lifelong objectives. Personalized instruction may include direct instruction, blended learning, credit recovery, and distance learning.

General Equivalency Diploma (GED)/ HiSet Test Prep

Fast track to GED or HiSet testing! Review the four current subject areas (Language Arts, Science, Social Science, and Math) in a supportive environment with knowledgeable instructors. This is an alternative high school diploma equivalence for native Spanish speakers and for native English speakers.

This class is offered in both languages.

Beginning Computer: Internet Basics

Internet Basics

This class meets in-person

This is an 8-week class for beginners to learn how to use web browsers and search engines to navigate the world wide web.  We will discuss best practices for online safety while surfing the web and submitting information. Prerequisite: None.

Northstar Digital Literacy Certification * is available for this class.

* In order to earn a Northstar Digital Literacy Certification, student must pass the assessment with a score of 85% or higher.  The student must present a valid photo ID on Northstar test days.

Intermediate Computer: Microsoft Powerpoint

This class meets in person. Class size is limited to 20 students. Register early!

This is an 8-week introduction to designing  presentations or slideshows using Microsoft PowerPoint 2016. Students will create a presentation with at least 6 slides. We will identify qualities of a good PowerPoint. We will add text, images, transitions, and animations to slides.We will learn how to insert and/or delete text boxes, images, and slides and navigate through the slideshow. Students will learn how to print a handout. Finally, students will present their PowerPoints to each other. Prerequisite: Microsoft Word or completion of computer basics with a score of 85% or higher. Powerpoint students must sign a Technology Acceptable Use contract.

Citizenship

This course prepares students to pass the oral and written exam for citizenship of the United States. This class is taught in English. Prerequisite: None.

Home based Edible Garden Enterprise

This class prepares students for success in the home-based culinary enterprise. We cover homemade food business operations from concept to packaging to profit. Each month covers a different product ranging from jams to breads to pastries. At the completion of the course, earn a workshop certificate or high school diploma credit.

Learn to design your edible farm-scape. Learn to farm in the convenience of your own property. Lessons include planting, growing, harvesting of fruits and vegetables, edible farm techniques, product, and enterprise.

Family Safety in the Car

This class is for adults who have been cited by police authorities for violations related to car seats or bike helmets. Monterey Adult School has provided classes on behalf of the Monterey County Health Department for the past ten years for adults cited for violations. We provide these classes once a month on Friday evenings. There is a $45.00 fee for the class, cash, or money order. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.
