SCHEDULE

English as a Second Language (ESL)

 

ESL courses focuses on knowledge and skills in the English literacy and civics units such as Healthcare, Diversity, Banking, and Education.  Classes offer growth in reading, writing, speaking, listening and technology in a sequence of levels. Levels include Beginning, Intermediate, and Advanced. 

 

  Registration for 3rd quarter begins on January 8, 2020.

High School Diploma
(HSD)/ GED

 

It’s never too late to earn your high school diploma! Individualized  instruction offered in a friendly, supportive environment to help adults realize their lifelong objectives. Personalized instruction may include direct instruction, blended learning, credit recovery, and distance learning.

General Equivalency Diploma (GED)/ HiSet Test Prep

 

Fast track to GED or HiSet testing! Review the four current subject areas (Language Arts, Science, Social Science, and Math) in a supportive environment with knowledgeable instructors. This is an alternative high school diploma equivalence for native Spanish speakers and for native English speakers.

This class is offered in both languages.

Citizenship

This course prepares students to pass the oral and written exam for citizenship of the United States. This class is taught in English. Prerequisite: None.

IET: Computer English for Work

Email

Students will create, send, and organize email as well as open and/or attach files to the email message. Netiquette, email etiquette, will be discussed. We will identify spam and junk email as well as how to delete and/or block it. Prerequisite: Microsoft Word or Internet Basics, and  an existing email account for each person in the class(preferably Gmail)  Northstar Digital Literacy Certification * is available for this class.
 

Email  begins on Wednesday, January 8, 2020.  There is a $50 fee per quarter, cash or money order. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.

 

* In order to earn a Northstar Digital Literacy Certification, student must pass the assessment with a score of 85% or higher.  Student must present a valid photo ID on Northstar test days. Student must attend at least 60% of classes to take the Northstar test.

IET: Computer English for Business

Microsoft PowerPoint 2016

This is an introduction to designing  presentations or slideshows using Microsoft PowerPoint 2016. Students will create a PowerPoint with at least 6 slides. We will identify qualities of a good PowerPoint. We will add text, images, transitions, and animations to slides.We will learn how to insert and/or delete text boxes, images, and slides and navigate through the slideshow. Students will learn how to print a handout. Finally, students will present their PowerPoints to each other. Prerequisite: Microsoft Word or experience using a touchpad or mouse  Northstar Digital Literacy Certification * is available for this class.  

 

PowerPoint begins on Wednesday, January 8, 2020.  There is a $50 fee per quarter, cash or money order. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.

AWD Computer Class 

 

This NEW computer class is for adults with moderate to severe disabilities. An aide/caretaker may be required to attend with the student. Students practice typing for 15 minutes at the beginning of each class followed by activities in PowerPoint, Word, or the Internet. 

 

Registration is available now. Class begins on Thursday, January 9, 2020.

Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)

This is the entry-level class into the growing nursing profession. The 7-week course is fast-paced, with instruction in the classroom and practical experience learned in a clinical setting.

Catering Fundamentals

 

A hands-on course that focuses on preparing students for success in a professional environment. Students will learn  essential kitchen and service skills while preparing to become a catering entrepreneur or to enter the workforce.The cost is $75 per quarter, cash or money order. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted. Limited scholarships are available.

Kitchen Fundamentals

 

Earn a professional Kitchen Prep Certificate while learning about sustainable hospitality and culinary arts. A hands-on course that focuses on preparing students for success in a commercial kitchen. Students will prepare for ServSafe certification, gain essential kitchen skills, and be prepared to enter the culinary workforce. Class runs for ten weeks. The cost is $75 per quarter, cash or money order. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted. Limited scholarships are available.

Family Safety in the Car

 

This class is for adults who have been cited by police authorities for violations related to car seats or bike helmets. Monterey Adult School has provided classes on behalf of the Monterey County Health Department for the past ten years for adults cited for violations. We provide these classes once a month on Friday evenings. There is a $45.00 fee for the class, cash or money order. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.

Parent Ed

 

Play and Learn!

Classes for young children 0-5 years old. The focus of these classes are Parent and child interaction, parenting skills, family literacy, positive discipline, and having fun!
