New Community Health Worker Training Program for Monterey County starts in October 2021!

California is poised to expand the training and hiring of Community Health Workers (CHWs) over the next several years.  To help prepare Monterey County residents for these job opportunities, the Monterey County Workforce Development Board (MCWDB), the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) are jointly sponsoring an innovative online CHW training program.

CHWs possess certain character traits. We are looking for applicants with high emotional intelligence - the ability to forge and sustain trusting relationships with individuals from different backgrounds.  We are also looking for individuals with “lived experience”—in Salinas this means someone who has a deep understanding of the Latino community and how information gets shared and disseminated.  We are looking for applicants who have courage and grit to be strong advocates for those who don’t have the skills to advocate for themselves.  Finally, we are looking for individuals who are comfortable navigating social service systems and the ability to push those systems to respond to their clients’ needs.

As the attached flyer indicates, the CHW Training Program will start on October 4, 2021 and end on April 2, 2022.  There are 30 spots available.  Online classes will occur every week, 1-2 evenings per week.  There will be a 40-hour internship that will span five weeks (8 hours per week), from early January to mid-March. Registration for the program closes on September 20, 2021.

The Application and additional information may be found on our website at https://www.montereycountywdb.org/job-seekers/community-health-worker-program/.

For more information you can reach out to Orlando Elizondo, CHW Program Manager, at 831.296.2220.
