MPUSD Recognizes National School Psychology Week From November 11-15

School psychologists are important in helping students succeed both inside and outside the classroom. They support students’ academic, social, emotional, and behavioral development by building strong connections between school, home, and the community.

These professionals work alongside teachers, parents, administrators, and other staff to create safe and welcoming environments where every student can thrive.

What Do School Psychologists Do?

School psychologists go through extensive training in both education and psychology. They complete a special degree program that includes over 60 graduate hours and a year-long internship. Their studies cover mental health, child development, learning, behavior, and school rules, among other topics.

School psychologists must be certified or licensed by the state, and some also earn national certification through the National School Psychology Certification Board. Their work is guided by ethical standards from the National Association of School Psychologists.

How Do They Help Students?

School psychologists work closely with students who are facing social, emotional, or behavioral challenges. They provide counseling, mentoring, and instruction to help students overcome these issues. They also identify learning barriers and recommend strategies to boost academic performance.

Additionally, school psychologists help students build important life skills like problem-solving, communication, self-control, and understanding different cultures.

Supporting Families and Teachers

School psychologists not only help students but also work closely with their families and teachers. They help identify learning or behavior problems that could affect a child’s success at school and evaluate whether a student qualifies for special education services. They also provide guidance to parents to strengthen the connection between home and school.

For teachers, school psychologists assist in finding solutions to academic challenges, designing interventions, and creating positive classroom environments where students feel motivated to learn.

Working with School Leaders

School psychologists also work with school leaders to analyze data related to student progress and school performance. They help put in place school-wide prevention programs that keep students safe and create a positive learning environment. They also respond to crises by coordinating with community resources and helping to create mental health programs.

By working together with students, families, teachers, and administrators, school psychologists ensure that all students in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District receive the support they need to succeed in school and life.
