Composting Workshop
Saturday, March 14th
10 AM - 11:30 AM
|
Description: The bilingual composting workshop is divided into two sections: backyard and worm composting. Backyard and worm composting will help you turn kitchen scraps and yard trimmings into a nutrient-rich soil amendment. Composting helps reduce greenhouse gases, provides nutrient-rich soil, and offers an environmentally superior alternative to landfilling.
Instructors: Estela Guerrero has been a master composter since 2009. She has helped the Salinas Valley community establish home composting systems that turn yard waste and food scraps into nutrient-rich soil by teaching people to build compost piles or start composting with worms. She has shared red wigglers with those eager to begin vermicomposting. She has also assisted schools, businesses, and public entities in creating diversion programs to reduce waste sent to landfills and to comply with local and state recycling laws. Julie Lorenzen is a certified UC Master Gardener and Composter who manages several organic gardens and a thriving California native hedgerow at the Rancho Cielo Youth Campus in Salinas. She leads the outdoor education program, where hands-on classes in composting, vermicomposting, and organic gardening are central to every learning experience. |
